EXPERTISE IS EVERYTHING

We have the experience and have the runs on the board.
The experience and result of non-tension, open hernia repair as a day procedure was presented to the Royal Australian College of Surgeons Meeting in Canberra May 1992. The results of Key-hole, Groin Hernia repair were also presented to the Royal College Meeting in Brisbane in 1997. Most recently, 1989 groin hernia key-hole repairs was presented to the College of Surgeons Meeting Sydney August 2007, which concluded that laparoscopic (key-hole) hernia repair is safe with low recurrence rate of less than 1% if compared with that of open repair, which is 8%-15%. The benefits also included less pain, superior cosmetic results, early return to normal activities and work. International presentation exposers include invited contributions to the Third International laparoscopic Surgery Conference, Cairo, November 1998; as well as invited contribution to the forth international endoscopic surgical congress, Aswan, Egypt, January 2001.

MOST RECENT

The advent biodegradable helical screws, 3D mesh and the recent use of biological glue has almost eliminated the risk.

Most recently the evidence of the superiority of laparoscopic versus open repair in general was presented at the Hernia Forum on 15 October 2010 in Sydney. The presentation showed unequivocal support. The research was based on reviewing 152 original articles and systematic reviews over 5 years from 2004 to 2010 and the research concluded the following:

1. Laparoscopic repair for ventral hernia (umbilical) is safe and in many respects is superior to open     surgery.

2. Laparoscopic inguinal (groin) hernia repair is safe, effective and beneficial to the patient. Operative     costs are high but when considered against early return to work and normal activities which has social     economic and lifestyle benefits, in this respect the global cost becomes evidently less.

Benefits of laparoscopic surgery at THE AUSTRALIAN HERNIA CENTRE
•  Over 5000 hernia operations performed.
•  High success rate & very low risk of hernia re-occurring verses open surgery.
•  Three tiny incisions and become invisible over a short period of time.
•  Short hospital stay (leaving the day of surgery or the first day after surgery).
•  Less post-operative pain.
•  Faster return to physical activities and work.
•  Fast recovery time (a recovery time of days instead of weeks).
•  Low overall costs (less hospital stay & less time off work).
•  Post surgery monitoring.
•  Attractive packages for self funded patients.
•  4 convenient locations.
